IMDb ratings are averages of votes from registered users on a scale of 1 to 10. A film does not rank on its average alone: IMDb weights the score so a title needs a very large number of votes before it can sit near the top, which is why a new release with a few thousand enthusiastic votes does not overtake a film with two million. This page follows that order, ties broken by the film that has held its rating longer.
What the Rating Means
Anything above 8.0 sits in the top fraction of a percent of every film on IMDb. The gap between 8.5 and 9.0 is a handful of films; the gap between 7.0 and 8.0 is thousands.
