Mima Kirigoe is one third of the idol group CHAM! and she is quitting to act in a crime drama. Her first scene is a rape scene. A fan called Me-Mania, with teeth that do not fit his face, does not like it. A website called Mima’s Room records her days in detail she did not write. And someone who looks exactly like the old Mima, in the CHAM! costume, keeps appearing in reflections, telling her she is the real one. Perfect Blue is 81 minutes, and Darren Aronofsky bought the rights so he could restage the bathtub shot in Requiem for a Dream.
What Happens As Mima Comes Apart
The screenwriter who wrote the rape scene is murdered. The photographer who shot her nude is murdered. Mima wakes up with blood on her clothes and no memory. The TV drama she is in has a plot about a woman with multiple personalities, and the film starts cutting between the drama and Mima’s life until the audience loses track of which is which, which is the point. The identity of the stalker, and the identity of the person behind the website, are two different reveals.
Why It Is Studied
Satoshi Kon’s first film as director. The editing, with scenes that end and restart as takes, is the technique Kon kept for Millennium Actress and Paprika. Black Swan is this film with ballet and Aronofsky has half-admitted it. It was made as a direct-to-video project and became the most influential anime film of its decade. It is for adult viewers.
