Casey Becker is home alone making popcorn when the phone rings. The caller wants to know her favourite scary movie. By the end of the call her boyfriend is dead on the patio and she is hanging from a tree. That is the first twelve minutes, and the biggest star in the film is dead before the title card. Scream is the film that made horror self-aware, and it is still the best version of the idea.
What Happens In Woodsboro
Sidney Prescott’s mother was murdered a year ago. Now the killer in the Ghostface mask is calling her, and everyone around her is a suspect: her boyfriend Billy, his friend Stu, the film-nerd Randy who explains the rules of surviving a horror film, and the reporter Gale Weathers who wrote the book saying the wrong man was convicted. The party at Stu’s house is the last act, with a TV playing Halloween, the rules being broken one by one, and the reveal that there are two killers.
Why It Changed Everything
Kevin Williamson’s script was the hottest in Hollywood in 1995. Drew Barrymore asked to play the opening victim instead of the lead. The Ghostface mask was found in a house during location scouting. It made 173 million dollars, started a franchise that is still going, and made every horror film after it either copy the rules or pretend not to know them.
