Roger and Carolyn Perron move into a farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, with their five daughters in January 1971. The dog will not come in. The clocks stop at 3:07. Something claps back during hide and clap. Carolyn wakes up with bruises. They call Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who would later be known for Amityville. The Conjuring is based on the Warrens’ case files, and it is the film that built the biggest horror franchise of the century.
What Happens At The Farmhouse
The Warrens find that the land belonged to Bathsheba Sherman, a woman accused of witchcraft in 1863, who sacrificed her child and hanged herself from the tree by the pond, cursing anyone who took the land. The entity possesses mothers and makes them kill their children. It gets into Carolyn. The exorcism in the cellar, with the Warrens, Roger and the girls, is the last act. The Annabelle doll in the Warrens’ artefact room got her own film.
Why It Was Different
James Wan shot it like a 1970s film, with long takes, zooms and a camera that follows the family through the house in one movement. There is almost no gore. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play the Warrens as a happily married couple, which is the trick. Lili Taylor as Carolyn does the heavy lifting. It was given an R rating for being too scary, with no violence to cut. It made 319 million dollars.
