Fourth of July, 1996. Julie, Helen, Barry and Ray are driving home from the beach when they hit a man on the road. They dump him off a pier and swear never to speak about it. One year later Julie gets a note: I know what you did last summer. Kevin Williamson wrote this the year after Scream, and the hook-handed fisherman in the slicker became the second-most copied killer of the decade.
What Happens A Year Later
Barry gets run down by a car. Helen, now a beauty queen, has her hair cut off in her sleep. The friends try to find out who they hit and discover that the man was already a killer. The Croaker Queen parade, the police station chase through the shop, and the boat finale are the set pieces. The man with the hook has a name, and it is the only mystery the film is interested in.
Why It Was A Hit
The four leads were the four biggest young actors on television in 1997: Jennifer Love Hewitt from Party of Five, Sarah Michelle Gellar from Buffy, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. Helen’s chase through the department store is one of the great slasher sequences. “What are you waiting for?” screamed at the sea is the poster. It was shot in Southport, North Carolina, and a 2025 sequel brought Hewitt and Prinze back.
