Two nuns in a cloistered abbey in Romania go into a tunnel to retrieve something. One hangs herself from the window rather than let it reach her. The Vatican sends Father Burke, who investigates miracles, and Sister Irene, a novice who has had visions since childhood. A French-Canadian farmer named Frenchie, who found the body, drives them up. The Nun is the biggest-grossing film in the Conjuring series, at 366 million dollars, and it is the origin of Valak, the demon from The Conjuring 2.
What Happens At The Abbey
The nuns pray in shifts, around the clock, to hold something in. The abbey was built by a duke who opened a gateway in the crypt, and the blood of Christ in a vial is the only thing that closes it. Burke is buried alive. Irene is given her vows by an abbess who has been dead for years. The last act is in the crypt with the vial, the flooded tunnel and the demon in the habit, and the last scene joins the film to the Warrens’ lecture at the start of the first Conjuring.
Why It Opened So Big
Bonnie Aarons’ Valak had been the face of The Conjuring 2’s marketing. Taissa Farmiga is Vera Farmiga’s sister, which the film does not mention and the series does. Corin Hardy shot it at a real castle in Transylvania. It is a jump-scare film in a gothic setting, and that was the point. The Nun II moved the story to France in 2023.
