Pierre Hunter comes back to the Driftless Area of Wisconsin after his parents die, takes a job behind a bar, and one night walks home drunk through the snow and falls through the ice on a lake. A woman named Stella pulls him out. Stella lives alone in a cabin and may or may not have died in a fire years before. The Driftless Area is a crime film and a ghost story at the same time, and it never tells you which one it really is.
What Happens With The Bag Of Money
Pierre gives a lift to a stranger named Shane, played by John Hawkes, who robs him at gunpoint. Later, by chance, Pierre finds Shane’s car with 77,000 dollars in it and takes the money. Shane wants it back. The film builds to a confrontation at Stella’s cabin, with Frank Langella as an old man who seems to know how everything is going to end because he has seen it before. The plot runs in a loop, and the second time through the pieces make a different shape.
Why It Is Worth Watching Now
This was one of Anton Yelchin’s last films before his death in 2016, and it is a quiet, strange performance. Zooey Deschanel plays Stella with none of her usual mannerisms. The film is adapted from Tom Drury’s novel and shot in winter in British Columbia standing in for Wisconsin.
