Stella Grant has cystic fibrosis and runs her hospital stays like a project: a schedule, a med cart, a YouTube channel. Will Newman has cystic fibrosis plus B. cepacia, an infection that means his lungs will never be transplanted and that he could pass it to any other CF patient. The rule for CF patients is six feet apart, always. Five Feet Apart is the title because Stella decides to take one foot back.
What Happens In The Hospital
Will is on a drug trial and does not take it seriously. Stella makes him, and makes him a schedule. They fall in love on opposite sides of a pool, down a hallway, each holding one end of a five-foot pool cue. Stella’s friend Poe, played by Moises Arias, is the other CF patient on the ward and his story is the one that breaks the film open. Stella’s own lungs come through for transplant on the night she has gone out with Will to see the lights.
Why It Became A Big Film For Its Audience
It was the biggest film of 2019 for Cole Sprouse outside Riverdale. Haley Lu Richardson’s performance, especially the breathing treatments and the physio scenes, is more specific than the genre usually gets. The CF community had real criticism of the rule-breaking, and the film acknowledges it. Justin Baldoni made it after a documentary series about a young woman with CF.
