Sandy Olsson thinks the boy she met on the beach that summer is gone for good. Then she transfers to Rydell High and there he is, Danny Zuko, leader of the T-Birds, pretending in front of his friends that he barely remembers her. Grease was the highest-grossing musical ever made when it came out in 1978, and it held that record for thirty years.
What Happens At Rydell High
The film runs through one school year. Danny tries to turn himself into a letterman for Sandy, Sandy tries to turn herself into a Pink Lady for Danny, Rizzo thinks she is pregnant, Kenickie races Greased Lightnin’ at Thunder Road, and the whole thing ends at the carnival with a car that flies. The songs are the point: Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You, Beauty School Dropout, Greased Lightnin’, and the finale You’re the One That I Want, which went to number one in both the US and the UK.
Why People Still Watch It Every Year
John Travolta made this a year after Saturday Night Fever and Olivia Newton-John was already a country-pop star, so the two leads arrived with their own audiences. Stockard Channing, playing a teenager at 33, gives Rizzo the only real heartbreak in the film with There Are Worse Things I Could Do. The costumes, the cars and the hand-jive at the school dance have all become shorthand for the 1950s even though the film is a 1970s idea of that decade.
