Comedy Family Music

Troy Bolton is captain of the East High Wildcats. Gabriela Montez is a decathlon champion who has just transferred in. On New Year’s Eve at a ski lodge they are pulled on stage for karaoke by accident and find out they can sing together. Back at school, they audition for the winter musical, which upsets the basketball team, the scholastic decathlon team, and Sharpay Evans, who has had the lead in every show since kindergarten. High School Musical was a Disney Channel movie that became the biggest thing in the world for three years.

What Happens At East High

Both teams scheme to keep Troy and Gabriela apart. The Status Quo number in the cafeteria is a whole school arguing that nobody should do anything new. Sharpay and her brother Ryan get the callback moved to the same time as the basketball final and the decathlon final. Both teams end up helping get them to the audition in time. Breaking Free is the song, and the We’re All In This Together finale is the gym.

Why It Became What It Did

It premiered in January 2006 to 7.7 million viewers and the soundtrack was the biggest-selling album of the year in the US. Zac Efron’s singing was partly dubbed by Drew Seeley in this one, which Efron has talked about since. Kenny Ortega, who choreographed Dirty Dancing, directed. Two sequels and a Disney+ series followed. Every school did it.
