Oliver Tate has two projects for the year. One is Jordana Bevan, a girl at his school who sets things on fire and does not do feelings. The other is his parents, whose marriage has gone so quiet that he checks the dimmer switch in their bedroom to see if they have had sex. Submarine is a coming-of-age film that is as much about the film in Oliver’s head, where he is the hero of a French New Wave movie, as about what actually happens in Swansea.
What Happens With Jordana And With Graham
Oliver and Jordana get together after a campaign that involves bullying a classmate together. Then Jordana’s mother gets sick and she needs him to be a person rather than a project. At the same time, Oliver’s mother, played by Sally Hawkins, is seeing a lot of Graham, the mystic next door with a mullet and a van, played by Paddy Considine, and Oliver’s father, played by Noah Taylor, is a marine biologist too depressed to notice. Oliver tries to fix both situations at once and fixes neither.
Why It Launched Richard Ayoade As A Director
Ayoade was known as Moss from The IT Crowd. This was his first feature, adapted from Joe Dunthorne’s novel, and it is shot in a square frame with Super 8 inserts, chapter titles and an Alex Turner soundtrack written for the film. Craig Roberts plays Oliver with a dead stare that makes every line funnier. Ben Stiller produced it.
