Shaun works in an electronics shop, lives with his best friend Ed, who plays video games and sells weed, and has just been dumped by Liz for never going anywhere but the Winchester. The next morning he walks to the corner shop, buys a Cornetto, and does not notice that everyone around him is dead. Shaun of the Dead is the first Cornetto film, the one that made Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and George A. Romero loved it.
What Happens With The Plan
Shaun’s plan: take the car, go to Mum’s, kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for all this to blow over. Mum has been bitten. Phil, the stepfather played by Bill Nighy, turns in the car. Liz’s flatmates David and Dianne come too. They walk through a zombie crowd by pretending to be zombies. At the Winchester, records are thrown at heads, the rifle on the wall works, Queen plays on the jukebox, and the question of who is left is the ending.
Why It Is A Perfect Film
The opening tracking shot is repeated after the outbreak with every detail changed. Shaun’s mother, played by Penelope Wilton, is the heart of it, and the scene in the cellar is where the comedy stops. Pegg and Wright wrote it from an episode of Spaced. The ending with Ed in the shed is the right ending. It is 99 minutes and not one is wasted.
