Samantha Baker wakes up on her sixteenth birthday and nobody mentions it. Her sister Ginny is getting married tomorrow, both sets of grandparents are staying, and a Chinese exchange student is sleeping in her room. She has a crush on Jake Ryan, a senior who does not know she exists, and a freshman called the Geek who will not leave her alone. Sixteen Candles is the first film John Hughes directed, and the one where he found Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall.
What Happens Over Two Days
Sam fills in a sex quiz in class naming Jake, and Jake picks it up. The school dance. The party at Jake’s house where the Geek borrows Jake’s father’s Rolls-Royce and Jake’s girlfriend Caroline. The wedding, with Ginny on muscle relaxants. And the final scene on the dining table with the birthday cake, which is the frame on every poster.
What To Know Going In
The Long Duk Dong character and the Caroline storyline have been criticised for decades and Ringwald has written about it herself. The film is also where the Hughes voice starts: the parents who are present but useless, the school as a class system, the one kind adult. Paul Dooley as the father, apologising on the sofa, is that adult here. Thompson Twins play over the ending.
