Casey Carlyle is the smartest girl at her school and her mother has her on course for Harvard. For her physics scholarship project, she decides to study the aerodynamics of figure skating, films the girls at the local rink, and works out how to improve their jumps. Then she tries them herself. Ice Princess is the Disney sports film about a girl who is good at the wrong thing, and Michelle Trachtenberg did the skating.
What Happens At The Rink
The coach is Tina Harwood, played by Kim Cattrall, a former Olympic hopeful who was banned for an incident, and whose daughter Gen, played by Hayden Panettiere, is the rink’s star and does not want to be. Casey rises through the regional levels while lying to her mother, played by Joan Cusack, about where she is. The two mothers are the film’s real subject: one pushing her daughter toward a dream the daughter does not have, the other away from one she does. Sectionals is the finale, and Casey’s Harvard interview happens the same day.
Why It Holds Up
Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano appear as themselves. Trachtenberg trained for eight months and skates most of her own routines. Cusack and Cattrall are two very different mothers and both are right about something. Trevor Blumas drives the Zamboni and is the boyfriend. Meg Cabot wrote the original story.
