JB runs away from his religious home in Kickapoo, Missouri, on the advice of a poster of Ronnie James Dio, and finds KG busking on Venice Beach. KG lies about being a rock legend. They form Tenacious D. They discover that every great guitarist used the same pick, carved from the tooth of the Devil, and it is in a museum in Sacramento. The Pick of Destiny bombed in 2006 and is now the film Tenacious D fans and Jack Black fans agree on.
What Happens On The Quest
The opening is Kickapoo, a rock opera with Meat Loaf as JB’s father and Dio as himself. A mushroom trip with a Sasquatch. A car chase with a one-legged man played by Tim Robbins who lost the leg to the pick. The museum break-in with laser tripwires. And the finale, where the Devil, played by Dave Grohl in full costume, comes to collect, and the only way out is a rock-off. The rock-off song is Beelzeboss and it is the best thing they ever recorded.
Why It Is A Cult Film
Liam Lynch, who did the Sifl and Olly puppet show, directs it like a long music video. John C. Reilly is the Sasquatch. Ben Stiller is the guitar shop owner. Amy Adams is in a bar. The soundtrack is the D’s second album. It made 13 million dollars on 20 and has never been off streaming.
