Comedy Drama Romance

Pat Solitano has spent eight months in a Baltimore psychiatric hospital after beating up the man he found in the shower with his wife. He comes home to his parents in Philadelphia with a plan: get fit, read his wife’s syllabus, win her back. There is a restraining order. At a dinner he meets Tiffany, a young widow who has her own reputation in the neighbourhood. Silver Linings Playbook got all four acting Oscar nominations, the first film to do that in 31 years, and Jennifer Lawrence won.

What Happens With The Dance

Tiffany offers to pass a letter to Pat’s wife if he partners her in a dance competition. They rehearse in her garage studio for weeks. Pat’s father, played by Robert De Niro, is a bookmaker with OCD who believes Pat is the lucky charm the Eagles need, and ends up betting everything on a parlay that includes the dance score. The competition is at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, the wife shows up, and the score they need is a five.

Why It Lands

David O. Russell adapted it because of his own son, and the mania in the house, with the family shouting over each other, is the most honest thing in it. Bradley Cooper’s diner scene about the Raisin Bran is where he became a serious actor. Chris Tucker, in his first non-Rush Hour role in years, is Pat’s friend from the hospital.
