Rod Kimble believes his dead father was a stuntman who tested Evel Knievel’s bikes. Rod rides a Tomos moped, wears a fake moustache, and cannot land a jump over a mail truck. His stepfather Frank beats him in their regular fights and will not respect him until Rod wins one. Then Frank needs a heart transplant. Hot Rod bombed in 2007 and became a cult film through DVD and cable, and it is the best thing The Lonely Island ever made.
What Happens In The Film
Rod decides to jump fifteen school buses to raise 50,000 dollars for the operation, so that he can then beat Frank up. His crew is his half-brother Kevin, Dave, Rico, and Denise, the neighbour played by Isla Fisher who he has loved for years. They train with a punch-dancing montage in the woods. Rod falls down a hill for about a minute. The word “whisky” becomes “wh-isky”. The jump is on live TV and goes exactly as well as every other jump in the film.
Why It Has A Following
Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg made it the year they were doing Digital Shorts on SNL, with Bill Hader and Danny McBride in the crew. Ian McShane is Frank. Sissy Spacek is Rod’s mother. The Europe soundtrack, especially the “Cool beans” scene and the riot set to Stand and Deliver, are what people come back for.
