Juno MacGuff drinks a gallon of Sunny D, takes three pregnancy tests at the drugstore, and tells the clerk the stick is not a Etch A Sketch. The father is Paulie Bleeker, who runs track and eats orange Tic Tacs. Juno decides to have the baby and give it to Mark and Vanessa Loring, a couple she finds in the Pennysaver. Juno won Diablo Cody the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in her first script, and it made 231 million dollars on a 7 million dollar budget.
What Happens Over Nine Months
The film runs autumn to spring. Juno visits the Lorings and bonds with Mark over horror films and guitars, which Vanessa notices. Her father and stepmother, played by J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney, back her completely, and Janney’s speech to the ultrasound technician is the best supporting scene of the year. Then Mark tells Juno he is leaving Vanessa, and Juno has to decide what a good home actually looks like.
Why It Is More Than Its Dialogue
The first twenty minutes are heavy with Cody’s slang, and the film slowly drops it as Juno grows up. Elliot Page got a Best Actress nomination at 20. The soundtrack by Kimya Dawson and The Moldy Peaches went to number one. Jason Reitman shot it in Vancouver in 30 days.
