Farhan and Raju get a call: Chatur, their old rival from the Imperial College of Engineering, has found Rancho. Rancho was the one who did not care about marks, took apart every rule, and disappeared on the day they graduated. The drive to find him is the frame, and the film is their college years told on the way. 3 Idiots was the highest-grossing Indian film ever when it came out, and it is still the one Aamir Khan is most asked about.
What Happens At Imperial College
Virus, the director played by Boman Irani, runs the college on fear. Rancho, played by Aamir Khan at 44 playing 20, asks what a machine is and gets thrown out of class. Farhan wants to be a wildlife photographer and his father wants an engineer. Raju carries his family’s hopes and a drawer full of rings for luck. Pia, Virus’s daughter, played by Kareena Kapoor, falls for Rancho. There is a delivery with a vacuum cleaner, a speech in Hindi that is not what it seems, and a trip to Ladakh where Rancho’s real name is found out.
Why It Travels Outside India
It was a huge hit in China, Japan and Korea, where exam pressure is the same story. “All is well” became a phrase. The film is loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, with a credit dispute that was its own news story. Shantanu Moitra’s songs, especially Give Me Some Sunshine, are part of why it lasts.
