Mary Stuart is fifteen, has been raised in a convent for her own safety, and arrives at the French court with four ladies-in-waiting to marry Francis, the Dauphin, to whom she has been engaged since she was six. Francis would rather not. His mother, Catherine de’ Medici, has been told by Nostradamus that the marriage will kill her son. The Reign pilot sets up all of that in 42 minutes and ends with someone trying to poison Mary before the first week is out.
What The Pilot Covers
We meet Bash, Francis’s illegitimate half-brother, who is the show’s second romantic lead from the first scene. We meet Mary’s friends Kenna, Lola, Greer and Aylee, who each get their own court intrigues over the next four seasons. There is a wedding, a ghost in the castle walls, and a palace feast shot like a music video. The series ran 78 episodes on The CW from 2013 to 2017 and follows Mary from this arrival through to her execution.
What To Expect From The Series
Reign never pretended to be a history lesson. The dresses are modern couture, the music is Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men, and the plot is Gossip Girl in the sixteenth century. Adelaide Kane holds it together and Megan Follows’ Catherine is the best thing in it.
