Tyler Gage breaks into the Maryland School of the Arts with his friends and trashes the theatre. He is sentenced to two hundred hours of community service there, mopping floors. Nora Clark is a senior whose partner for the final showcase, the one the scouts come to, has just broken his ankle. Tyler can dance. Step Up is where Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met and later married, and it started a franchise of six films.
What Happens Before The Showcase
Nora’s choreography is classical and Tyler’s is from the street, and the film is them finding the middle. Nora’s mother wants her to go to college instead. Tyler’s friend Mac is drifting toward real trouble with his younger brother Skinny following. Miles and Lucy, the music student and Nora’s best friend, have their own story. The showcase is Tyler and Nora’s routine to the whole school with the dance that the film was built around. The Skinny storyline is what gives the film weight.
Why It Launched A Series
Tatum had been a dancer before acting, and the camera stays on him in long takes. Anne Fletcher, a choreographer, directed her first film. The soundtrack with Ciara, Chris Brown and Sean Paul was its own hit. Jenna Dewan trained in ballet from childhood. Step Up 2: The Streets moved the story to Baltimore’s clubs, and the later films went to Miami and Las Vegas.
