Andie Walsh makes her own clothes, works at a record store, and lives with a father who has not got out of bed properly since her mother left. Blane McDonough is a richie, the school’s word for the kids with money, and he asks her out. His friend Steff, played by James Spader, thinks it is a joke. Duckie, who has loved Andie since they were children, agrees with Steff for different reasons. Pretty in Pink was written by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch, and the ending was changed after test audiences booed the original.
What Happens Before Prom
Blane asks Andie to prom and then, under pressure from Steff, pretends he had already asked someone else. Andie makes a dress from two old ones, her father’s gift and Iona’s, and goes alone. Duckie is there. Blane is there. In the original ending she went home with Duckie. In the ending that was shot, she does not. Jon Cryer has said he was heartbroken, and Molly Ringwald has said he was right.
Why It Still Matters
Duckie’s lip-sync to Otis Redding’s Try a Little Tenderness in the record store is the scene. Annie Potts as Iona, with a new look every scene, is the best adult. Harry Dean Stanton as the father is the saddest. The Psychedelic Furs re-recorded their song for the title. Some Kind of Wonderful, the following year, is this film with the ending the audience wanted.
