Bastian Balthazar Bux is bullied on the way to school, hides in a bookshop, and takes a book with a snake symbol on the cover. He reads it in the school attic during a storm. In the book, Fantasia is being eaten by the Nothing, the Childlike Empress is dying, and a boy called Atreyu is sent to find a cure. As Bastian reads, the book starts to know he is there. The NeverEnding Story was the most expensive film made outside the US or USSR when it came out, and it has not left childhoods since.
What Happens In Fantasia
Atreyu rides his horse Artax into the Swamps of Sadness and loses him, which is the scene parents warn each other about. He meets Morla the ancient turtle, is chased by Gmork the wolf, passes the Sphinx gate, and finds Falkor, the luckdragon with a dog’s face who sings. The Rockbiter sits with his big strong hands. The Empress’s final request is for Bastian to give her a name, and he shouts it out of the attic window into the storm.
Why It Lasts
Wolfgang Petersen, straight off Das Boot, shot it in Bavaria with practical creatures built by Brian Johnson’s team. Limahl’s theme song was a hit everywhere. Michael Ende, who wrote the book, hated the film and sued. The second half of the book was never filmed properly. The sequel is best forgotten.
