Adaline Bowman was born in San Francisco in 1908. In 1935 her car went off a road into freezing water, lightning hit the water, and something happened to her cells that the film explains in a narrator’s voice as if it were a nature documentary. She has looked 29 ever since. The Age of Adaline is a romance built on one practical problem: if you never age, you cannot stay anywhere, or with anyone, for more than a decade.
What Happens When Adaline Meets Ellis
Adaline, going by Jenny, works in the San Francisco archives and moves identity every ten years. Her daughter Flemming, played by Ellen Burstyn, is now in her eighties and the two of them pass as grandmother and granddaughter. Ellis Jones, played by Michiel Huisman, is persistent enough to get her to a weekend with his parents. His father, played by Harrison Ford, opens the door and recognises her. He knew her in 1966. The last act is what Adaline decides to do with that.
Why Harrison Ford Is The Reason To Watch
Ford has about twenty minutes and plays a man meeting the woman he nearly married fifty years ago, who has not changed a day. He is better in this than in anything he did that decade. Blake Lively carries the costume changes across eight decades without turning it into a fashion show, and the San Francisco locations are shot properly.
