Saturday, 24 March 1984, 7am. Five students report to the library of Shermer High School for a day of detention: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. They are told to write an essay on who they think they are. The Breakfast Club takes place in one room over one day, and it is still the film every teen movie since has been measured against.
What Happens In The Library
Nothing, for a long time, and that is the point. Bender picks fights, Claire ignores him, Brian tries to do the essay, Andrew sulks and Allison eats a sandwich of sugar and cereal. Then the vice principal locks Bender in a storage room, the five of them sneak out to his locker for his stash, and in the afternoon they sit in a circle on the floor and say the things they have never said to anyone. Why Brian is really there is the line that stops the film.
Why It Is Still Watched Forty Years On
John Hughes wrote it in two days and shot it in sequence in a real Illinois school gym dressed as a library, so the cast’s relationships grew as the film did. Simple Minds’ Don’t You (Forget About Me) over the closing fist pump is the most copied ending in the genre. The dance scene was improvised because Molly Ringwald did not want to do a solo.
