Chiara and Damiano are getting married in Polignano a Mare, the clifftop town in Puglia where Domenico Modugno was born. The problem is their parents. Ninella, the bride’s mother, and Don Mimi, the groom’s father, were in love twenty-five years ago and were pulled apart by their families. Now they have to sit at the same top table. Io che amo solo te is a wedding film where the old couple matter more than the young one.
What Happens At The Wedding
The film runs from the morning of the wedding to the end of the reception. Don Mimi’s wife knows the history and has her own way of handling it. Ninella’s sisters push her to say something before it is too late. The young couple have their own doubts, and a cousin from Rome played by Riccardo Scamarcio turns up and stirs everything. It is adapted from Luca Bianchini’s novel of the same name, which was a bestseller in Italy.
Why It Was A Hit In Italy
Marco Ponti shot it on location in Polignano in high summer and the town is the real star. Michele Placido and Maria Pia Calzone play the older couple with a weight the comedy around them does not quite earn, and the title song is Modugno’s Io che amo solo te, sung in full. A sequel, La cena di Natale, followed in 2016 with the same cast. In Italian with English subtitles.
