Daphne Reynolds has grown up in Chinatown above a restaurant with her mother, a wedding singer, and a photo of a man in Morocco. The man is Henry Dashwood, now Lord Dashwood, who is about to give up his seat in the House of Lords to stand for election, and whose fiancee’s family would rather an American daughter did not exist. Daphne turns up at the gate. What a Girl Wants is a remake of a 1958 Sandra Dee film, and it is the one where Colin Firth wears leather trousers.
What Happens In London
Henry takes her in. His fiancee Glynnis and her daughter Clarissa work to get her out. Daphne goes to a debutante ball in a dress that is not what the other girls are wearing, climbs out of windows to see Ian, a musician played by Oliver James, and slowly becomes the proper English girl the campaign needs, which is where she loses herself and Henry notices. Eileen Atkins as the grandmother is the one who sees it. The ending involves the election, a wedding and a run through the streets.
Why It Keeps Getting Streamed
Amanda Bynes was coming off The Amanda Show and Big Fat Liar and this was the film that moved her to leads. Colin Firth plays it straight. The coronation chicken, the Burberry, the dancing with the grandmother to James Brown, all of it is the comfort-watch of its year for a certain age. Kelly Preston is the mother.
