Maggie Peyton has just graduated and has a job at ESPN waiting. Her father, Ray, is a former NASCAR driver who runs a struggling racing team and has forbidden her to race after a crash. For graduation he gives her a car from a scrapyard. It is a white 1963 Volkswagen Beetle with a 53 on the door, and it has opinions. Herbie: Fully Loaded is the sixth Love Bug film, thirty-seven years after the first, and the only one with a NASCAR finale.
What Happens With Herbie
Herbie drives Maggie to a street race and beats Trip Murphy, the NASCAR champion played by Matt Dillon, who then wants a rematch and wants the car. Maggie races in a helmet as “Max” so her father will not know. Kevin, the mechanic played by Justin Long, works out the car is alive. Trip wins Herbie in a bet, strips him, and Herbie ends up in a demolition derby. The last act is the NASCAR race at Fontana with Herbie on the track against real drivers.
Why It Is Lohan’s Odd One Out
It came out two months after Mean Girls made her the biggest teen star in America, and it is a kids’ film. Michael Keaton is the father, which is the surprise. Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. appear as themselves. Herbie’s facial expressions are done with the bumper and headlights, as in the 1968 original. Lohan’s First is on the soundtrack.
