Howard Langston sells mattresses and misses everything his son does. He promises Jamie a Turbo Man action figure for Christmas, forgets, and on Christmas Eve morning discovers that every Turbo Man in Minnesota sold out weeks ago. Jingle All the Way was made about the Cabbage Patch and Power Rangers riots, and it is the Schwarzenegger film that gets watched every year by people who would not say so.
What Happens On Christmas Eve
Howard meets Myron, a postal worker played by Sinbad with the same mission, and the two of them spend the day at war: a lottery ball race in a toy store, a counterfeit Turbo Man ring run by mall Santas, a fight with a reindeer, a radio station that does not actually have a doll, and a bomb that turns out to be a package. The neighbour Ted, played by Phil Hartman, has a doll and designs on Howard’s wife. The ending is the Christmas parade, where Howard is put into the Turbo Man costume by accident and has to fly.
Why It Lasts Despite The Reviews
It was called cynical in 1996 and it is, deliberately, and that is why it has aged into something honest. “Put that cookie down” is a line people say every December. Jake Lloyd made this three years before he was Anakin. Phil Hartman’s last big film role. Turbo Man became a real toy.
