Elle Woods is president of her sorority, a fashion merchandising major with a 4.0, and expects a proposal at dinner. Warner Huntington III tells her instead that he needs a Jackie, not a Marilyn, and is going to Harvard Law. Elle gets a 179 on the LSAT and goes to Harvard Law. Legally Blonde made Reese Witherspoon a star and started a musical, two sequels and a television series.
What Happens At Harvard
Elle arrives in pink with a chihuahua named Bruiser. Warner’s new fiancee Vivian, played by Selma Blair, gets her thrown out of a class. Elle learns to study, earns an internship with Professor Callahan on a murder case, and works out that the defendant, a fitness guru, could not have been sleeping with the pool boy because the pool boy is gay. The courtroom finale is Elle in pink cross-examining the stepdaughter about a perm. Paulette, the manicurist played by Jennifer Coolidge, gets the bend and snap.
Why It Keeps Going
Witherspoon plays Elle as someone who is never the joke. The script by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith, who also wrote 10 Things I Hate About You, was adapted from Amanda Brown’s novel about her own law school years. Luke Wilson is Emmett. “What, like it’s hard?” is on mugs everywhere. Legally Blonde 3 was in development for a decade.
