Scott Calvin works for a toy company, is divorced, and has his son Charlie for Christmas Eve. They hear a noise on the roof. Scott shouts, a man in a red suit falls off, and the man disappears, leaving the suit and a card that says to put it on and the reindeer will know what to do. Scott puts it on. The Santa Clause was Tim Allen’s first film, made while Home Improvement was the biggest show on television, and it started a trilogy and a series.
What Happens After Christmas Eve
Scott delivers the presents, is taken to the North Pole, and is told by Bernard, the head elf, that the Santa Clause on the card means he has accepted the job. Over the next year he gains weight, grows a beard that will not shave off, and craves milk and cookies. Charlie’s mother and stepfather, a psychiatrist played by Judge Reinhold, think Scott is having a breakdown and go to court. The last act is Scott’s rescue from prison by the elves with the tinsel-and-wire ELFS squad.
Why It Is A Standard
The North Pole is run by children because elves are children, which is why the film feels different from other Santa films. David Krumholtz’s Bernard is the best elf on screen. Allen plays the transformation as a man slowly losing an argument with his own body. The 1-800-SPANK-ME joke was cut from later versions after children called it.
