Gomez Addams has held a seance every year for twenty-five years to bring back his brother Fester, who disappeared after a fight. The family lawyer owes money to a loan shark named Abigail Craven, whose son Gordon looks exactly like Fester. They send him in. The Addams Family was Barry Sonnenfeld’s first film as director after shooting the Coen brothers’ early work, and it looks like it.
What Happens In The House
Gordon, as Fester, is shown the vault full of gold, the bottomless pit, the family graveyard and the crocodile. He is supposed to find the money. He starts to like being an Addams. Wednesday and Pugsley perform the Hamlet duel at the school play with real blood. Morticia and Gomez dance the Mamushka. Abigail has the family thrown out of their own house and they end up in a motel, Gomez watching Gilligan’s Island in despair. The ending is a hurricane and a book that is not a book.
Why It Is The Definitive Version
Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston are the best Gomez and Morticia there have been, including the 1960s series, and their marriage is the film’s actual subject. Christina Ricci’s Wednesday, deadpan at ten, is the one every version since has copied. Christopher Lloyd’s Fester is sad underneath the makeup. Thing was played by a magician’s hand. The sequel is even better.
