Will Stronghold’s father is the Commander and his mother is Jetstream. They have a secret base under the house and expect their son to be the next thing. He starts at Sky High, a school on a floating island where the first day’s assembly sorts you into Hero or Sidekick. Will cannot lift a thing. Sidekick. Sky High is the superhero high-school film Disney made three years before anyone thought that was a genre, and it is better than most of what came after.
What Happens At School
Will’s friends in Hero Support, the polite name for sidekick class, include Layla who grows plants and will not use it for fighting, Zach who glows, Ethan who melts and Magenta who turns into a guinea pig. The bully is Warren Peace, whose father Will’s father put in prison. Will gets his strength halfway through the year, moves up to Hero, dates the popular girl Gwen, and forgets everyone else. Gwen turns out to be Royal Pain, the villain his father defeated, and the homecoming dance is the showdown with a ray that turns everyone into babies.
Why It Has A Following
Kurt Russell plays the Commander as a man who loves his son and has no idea how to say so. Bruce Campbell is Coach Boomer. Lynda Carter is the principal. The soundtrack is 1980s covers by 2000s bands. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Gwen and Danielle Panabaker as Layla both went on to bigger things. A sequel never happened and people are still asking.
