A bank robbery opens the film. Six men in clown masks, each told to kill the one before him once his job is done, until only one is left standing in the vault with the money. That is the Joker’s introduction, and it tells you everything about how he operates before he says a word. The Dark Knight is the film that made a comic-book movie a Best Picture conversation, and Heath Ledger won the Oscar for it five months after he died.
What Happens In Gotham
Batman, Lieutenant Gordon and the new district attorney Harvey Dent have the mob on the run. The mob hires the Joker. He kills a judge, a commissioner, tries to kill the mayor, and tells the city that people will die every day until Batman takes off the mask. The middle of the film is the truck chase and the interrogation room. The last hour is two ferries wired with explosives, Dent in a hospital bed with half his face gone, and Batman choosing to take the blame for what Two-Face did so that Gotham keeps its hero.
Why It Is Still The One
Nolan shot the big sequences on IMAX film, which had never been done for a feature. Ledger’s Joker has no origin and gives three different ones. Aaron Eckhart’s Dent is the actual tragedy of the film. It made over a billion dollars in 2008, and the Academy expanded the Best Picture field to ten the following year largely because this film was left out.
