Seligman, an older bachelor who lives alone with his books, finds a woman lying in an alley in the snow, bleeding. He brings her home, makes her tea, and she tells him who she is. Her name is Joe, and she describes herself in the first sentence as a nymphomaniac. Volume I is the first half of a four-hour film, and it covers Joe’s life from childhood to her early twenties in five chapters, each one framed by Seligman’s attempts to find the pattern in it.
What The Five Chapters Cover
The Compleat Angler is Joe and her friend B competing to seduce men on a train, scored by Seligman’s fly-fishing theory. Jerome is the man who takes her virginity, played by Shia LaBeouf, and who keeps returning to her life. Mrs. H is Uma Thurman’s one scene, a wife who brings her three sons to see the woman their father is leaving them for, which is the best ten minutes in either volume. Delirium is Joe’s father, played by Christian Slater, dying in hospital. The Little Organ School is Joe building her life around three lovers at once, explained through Bach.
What To Know Before Watching
Stacy Martin plays the young Joe and Charlotte Gainsbourg plays her in the present. The sex is explicit and body doubles were used for the most graphic shots. This is the theatrical cut; the director’s cut runs longer. Volume II continues directly from the end. For adult viewers only.
