Sara Johnson’s mother is killed in a car crash driving to Sara’s Juilliard audition in a snowstorm. Sara stops dancing, moves in with her jazz-musician father in a Chicago apartment, and starts at a school where she is one of the only white students. Chenille, played by Kerry Washington, takes her under her wing. Chenille’s brother Derek is going to Georgetown for pre-med and dances at the club Stepps. Save the Last Dance opened at number one in January 2001 and made 131 million dollars, which nobody expected from an MTV Films teen drama.
What Happens In Chicago
Derek teaches Sara to dance hip hop at Stepps, and she teaches him ballet positions. Their relationship is a problem for Derek’s ex, for his friend Malakai who is heading for prison, and for Chenille, who says what the film is actually about in one scene in a laundromat. Sara re-applies to Juilliard. The audition, with Derek watching through the door and the ballet turning into something else, is the finale. Malakai’s storyline ends the way it was always going to.
Why It Still Works
Julia Stiles trained for months and does her own dancing. Sean Patrick Thomas plays Derek as the smartest person in every scene. Kerry Washington’s first major role. The soundtrack went double platinum. Thomas Carter, who made Coach Carter later, shot it in Chicago in winter.
