Cher Horowitz is sixteen, rich, kind in a way that mostly benefits Cher, and convinced she can fix anyone’s life. She sets up two teachers so her grades go up, then takes on Tai, the new girl, as a project. Clueless is Jane Austen’s Emma moved to Beverly Hills in 1995, and it is the rare teen comedy that is as smart as the book it comes from.
What Happens In Beverly Hills
Tai gets the makeover and becomes more popular than Cher. Cher falls for Christian, who is not interested in girls, which everyone but Cher can see. Her ex-stepbrother Josh, played by Paul Rudd in his first film, hangs around the house being a college student with opinions. There is a driving test, a party in the Valley, a mugging at gunpoint in which Cher refuses to lie on the ground in an Alaia dress, and the moment at the fountain when she works out what the audience has known for an hour.
Why It Became A Language
“As if”, “whatever”, “I’m totally buggin'” and “a full-on Monet” all came from this script, and Amy Heckerling built the dialogue from listening to actual Beverly Hills High students. The yellow plaid suit is the most referenced outfit in 1990s film. Brittany Murphy and Donald Faison both got their careers from it.
