Dr Vivien Morgan is a physicist whose experiment goes wrong and sends her, her laptop and a bag of 1990s gadgets to Camelot in the sixth century. She is about to be burned as a witch until she predicts an eclipse from her computer, and King Arthur makes her his new court magician instead. A Knight in Camelot is Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court remade as a Disney television film with Whoopi Goldberg, and it is exactly as light as that sounds.
What Vivien Does To Camelot
She introduces the court to stapled documents, bicycles and the idea that peasants should not be whipped. Merlin, played by Ian Richardson, does not appreciate the competition and starts plotting. Michael York’s King Arthur is kind and a bit dim. Morgan Le Fay is Amanda Donohoe. Vivien takes a young squire under her wing, and the climax is a joust she wins with modern tricks before the eclipse trick gets her home.
Who It Is For
This was made for The Wonderful World of Disney in 1998 and is a family film through and through. The castle sets were built in Hungary, the costumes are bright, and Goldberg plays it the way she played Guinan on Star Trek, amused by everybody. If you grew up with it, it holds up as the comfort watch it was meant to be.
