Aisha Chaudhary was born in 1996 with severe combined immunodeficiency, had a bone marrow transplant in London at six months, and developed pulmonary fibrosis as a side effect of the treatment that saved her. She gave a TEDx talk at fifteen, wrote a book, and died in January 2015. The Sky Is Pink is narrated by Aisha from the afterlife, and the film is really about her parents’ marriage across the twenty-five years around her.
What The Film Covers
Aditi and Niren Chaudhary meet in Delhi in the 1980s, lose a daughter before Aisha to the same condition, and go to London for the treatment with money raised through a radio appeal. The film moves between Delhi, London and Chandigarh, between the early years and the last ones, and spends as much time on the two of them arguing over a hospital bill or a new house as it does on illness. Zaira Wasim, in her final role before leaving acting, plays Aisha as a teenager who wants to talk about boys rather than death.
Why Priyanka Chopra Chose It
This was her return to Hindi film after three years in American television, and she plays Aditi from her twenties to her fifties. Farhan Akhtar’s Niren is the quieter half and gets the film’s best scene, in a car, near the end. Shonali Bose lost her own son and has said the film is as much about that. It premiered at Toronto in September 2019.
