The Goon Docks are about to be bulldozed for a golf course. Mikey Walsh, his brother Brand, and their friends Chunk, Mouth and Data find a 1632 treasure map in the attic and decide that One-Eyed Willy’s gold is the only thing that will save the neighbourhood. The Goonies was written by Chris Columbus from a Steven Spielberg story, and it is the film that defined what a kids’ adventure looks like.
What Happens Under The Lighthouse
The map leads to an abandoned restaurant that the Fratelli family, a mother and two sons on the run from the police, are using as a hideout. Below it are booby-trapped tunnels, a waterfall, a pipe organ made of bones and, at the end, a pirate ship in a cave. Sloth, the chained-up third Fratelli brother, befriends Chunk and becomes the hero. The truffle shuffle, “Hey you guys” and the wishing well speech are all in here.
Why It Still Works
Richard Donner kept the kids in the dark about the ship until they walked onto the set, so their reactions are real. The cast includes Josh Brolin in his first film, Ke Huy Quan a year after Temple of Doom, and Sean Astin at 13. Cyndi Lauper’s theme song was a hit. Astoria still gets Goonies tourists every June.
