Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the CIA director and she is about to be impeached. To clean up her files she sends four of her off-the-books operatives, Yelena Belova, John Walker, Ghost and Taskmaster, to the same underground vault with orders to kill whoever they find there. They find each other. They also find Bob, a man in hospital scrubs who does not remember how he got there. Thunderbolts* is the Marvel film about depression, and that is not a reading, it is the plot.
What Happens After The Vault
The group gets out, picks up Red Guardian, Yelena’s father, and Bucky Barnes, now a congressman, and goes after Valentina. Bob turns out to be Sentry, the result of Valentina’s super-soldier project, and when he breaks he becomes the Void, a shadow that swallows New York block by block and traps people in their worst memories. The ending is not a fight. It is Yelena walking into the dark to sit with him.
Why It Was The Marvel Film People Liked Again
Florence Pugh carries it and David Harbour gets the laughs. Jake Schreier shot on real locations and kept the action grounded, closer to a heist film than a Marvel finale. The asterisk in the title is explained in the last scene. It opened in May 2025 to the best reviews Marvel had seen in years.
