Auric Goldfinger is a bullion dealer who cheats at cards, cheats at golf and is smuggling gold out of Britain in the bodywork of his Rolls-Royce. M sends Bond to find out how. Bond finds out, and finds out the real plan, Operation Grand Slam, which is not to steal the gold in Fort Knox but to make it worthless. Goldfinger is the film where the Bond formula was finished: the gadget car, the pre-title sequence, the henchman with a gimmick, the Shirley Bassey theme.
What Happens In The Film
Jill Masterson is painted gold and dies of skin suffocation, an image that was on the cover of Life magazine before the film came out. Bond is strapped to a table with a laser moving towards him and asks “Do you expect me to talk?” and gets the best reply in the series. The Aston Martin DB5 has an ejector seat, and it is used. Pussy Galore, played by Honor Blackman straight from The Avengers, runs a flying circus. Oddjob throws his bowler hat. The finale is inside Fort Knox with a nuclear device and a countdown that stops at 007.
Why It Is The Bond Film People Start With
It was the first Bond film to open in the United States as an event and it paid for itself in two weeks. Gert Frobe, who spoke almost no English, was dubbed. Guy Hamilton kept the film at 110 minutes, which is why it moves faster than almost any Bond film since.
