A ceramic hand with writing on it is passed around at parties. You hold it, say “talk to me”, and something comes. You say “I let you in” and it is inside you for ninety seconds, which the room films on phones. Over ninety seconds and the door does not shut. Mia, whose mother died two years ago, wants to try it. Talk to Me was made by two YouTubers from Adelaide and became A24’s highest-grossing horror film.
What Happens When Riley Goes Over
Mia’s best friend’s little brother, Riley, is let in, and the spirit that comes is Mia’s mother, or something saying it is. Mia lets it stay too long. Riley smashes his own head into a table until there is nothing left to recognise. In hospital he is still possessed. Mia, who can now see the dead everywhere, is told by her mother’s spirit what to do to save him, and the thing she is told is the last act. The ending is one of the bleakest in recent horror and it is earned.
Why It Hit
Danny and Michael Philippou ran the RackaRacka channel and shot the possession scenes with practical effects and real actors contorting. Sophie Wilde’s Mia got her an AACTA award. The hand itself has been merchandised. It premiered at Sundance in January 2023, went to cinemas in July, and made 92 million dollars. A sequel, Talk 2 Me, is in production.
