In 1986 a girl wanders away from her parents at the Santa Cruz boardwalk, into a hall of mirrors, and sees a girl who is not a reflection. In 2019 Adelaide Wilson goes back to Santa Cruz with her husband and two children and does not want to be there. That night four figures stand in the driveway, holding hands. They come inside. They are the Wilsons, with scissors. Us was Jordan Peele’s second film and opened bigger than Get Out, and Lupita Nyong’o plays both Adelaide and Red.
What Happens With The Tethered
Red speaks in a voice like a broken throat and explains that she is the shadow, that the Wilsons had the sun and the Tethered had the dark, and that this is a day of untethering. The family is split up and each child has to fight their own double. The Tylers, the neighbours played by Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker, go first. Across America, the Tethered are coming up and forming a line, hand in hand, like the 1986 Hands Across America. The ending underground, in a classroom, is the reveal of who Adelaide is.
Why It Is Argued About
The twist is either the point or a cheat depending on who you ask, and Peele has said both readings are allowed. Nyong’o’s two performances are the film. The score’s version of I Got 5 on It is the trailer everyone remembers. Winston Duke’s Gabe is the dad joke under pressure. It made 255 million dollars.
