Sarah is fifteen, resents babysitting her half-brother Toby, and reads aloud from a play about a Goblin King who takes unwanted children. The goblins are listening. Toby vanishes, Jareth the Goblin King appears in her bedroom in a cloud of glitter, and Sarah has thirteen hours to reach the castle at the centre of the Labyrinth. Labyrinth was Jim Henson’s last film as director, and it is the one where David Bowie sings to a baby surrounded by puppets.
What Happens In The Labyrinth
Hoggle, the dwarf who sprays fairies, becomes her reluctant guide. Ludo is the gentle beast who calls rocks. Sir Didymus is a fox-terrier knight on a sheepdog. There are helping hands that form faces, a bog of eternal stench, a masked ball inside a crystal bubble with Bowie singing As the World Falls Down, and the Escher staircase room at the end where Sarah says the line she could not remember at the start.
Why It Was A Flop That Became A Classic
It lost money in 1986 and Henson took it hard. On video it found its audience, and it has been a midnight film, a Halloween costume and a Bowie entry point for forty years. Jennifer Connelly was 14. Toby Froud, the baby, is now a puppet maker himself. Brian Froud designed every creature. Magic Dance is the song.
