Jane and Michael Banks write their own advertisement for a nanny, their father tears it up and throws it in the fireplace, and the next morning a woman with a carpet bag and a parrot-headed umbrella floats down from the sky holding the taped-together pieces. Mary Poppins was Walt Disney’s biggest live-action film and the one he had been chasing for twenty years, since his daughters first read him the books.
What Happens On Cherry Tree Lane
Mary takes the children into a chalk pavement drawing, where the penguins wait tables and Dick Van Dyke’s Bert sings Jolly Holiday. Uncle Albert laughs so hard he floats to the ceiling. The children visit their father’s bank and Michael refuses to hand over his tuppence, which starts a run on the bank. Mr Banks is fired, goes to the bank at midnight to be formally dismissed, and comes home a different man. The ending is a kite, and it is one of the best endings in any Disney film.
The Songs And The Oscars
The Sherman brothers wrote A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Feed the Birds, which was Walt Disney’s favourite song, and Chim Chim Cher-ee, which won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The film won five Academy Awards in total, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews in her first film role. P.L. Travers, who wrote the books, hated it, and that story became Saving Mr. Banks.
