Carrigan Crittenden inherits Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine, finds it is haunted, and hires a “ghost therapist”, Dr James Harvey, to clear it out. Harvey is a widower who has been chasing ghosts hoping to find his wife. His daughter Kat is thirteen and tired of moving. The ghost is Casper, who just wants a friend. Casper was the first film with a fully CGI lead character, two years before Titanic and one after Jurassic Park.
What Happens At Whipstaff
Casper’s uncles Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso want everyone out. Carrigan wants the treasure she thinks is hidden in the house. Kat and Casper become friends, and Casper shows her the machine his father built to bring him back, the Lazarus, which has one dose left. Dr Harvey gets killed by accident and has to be a ghost for a while. The Halloween party ending, where Casper becomes a boy for one dance, is the scene the film was built around, and Devon Sawa is the boy.
Why It Still Works For Kids And Adults
Christina Ricci was coming off two Addams Family films and plays Kat without sugar. Bill Pullman drunk as a ghost is funnier than it should be. Dan Aykroyd turns up as Ray Stantz for one line. The house was built as a real set and the Lazarus machine was practical.
