It is two years after Steven brought peace to the Gem Homeworld. He is sixteen, Beach City is quiet, and he has a song about how everything is fine now. Then a pink gem with a rubber-hose cartoon body drops out of the sky with a giant injector drill, wipes the memories of Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, and poisons the ground. Steven Universe: The Movie is a full musical with sixteen new songs, and it works as its own story even if you never saw the show.
What Happens In The Movie
Spinel was Pink Diamond’s playmate, told to stand still in a garden and wait, and left there for six thousand years. Steven has to rebuild his friends’ personalities from scratch, which gives the film a reset-button structure where each Crystal Gem is reintroduced at zero. Pearl needs to find someone to serve, Amethyst copies whoever is nearest, Garnet has to re-fuse from Ruby and Sapphire. The finale is Steven versus Spinel inside the injector, and the question is not whether he can beat her but whether he can convince her to stop.
Why It Was Made As A Musical
Rebecca Sugar wrote the songs with Chance the Rapper, Aimee Mann and Ted Leo contributing, and the voice cast includes Estelle as Garnet and Broadway’s Sarah Stiles as Spinel. Other Friends and Drift Away are the two numbers people remember. The film aired on Cartoon Network in September 2019 and led into the Steven Universe Future epilogue series.
