Hana is a university student in Tokyo who notices a man in her lecture without a textbook. He is the last of the wolf people, and he shows her by changing. They have a daughter, Yuki, born in a snowstorm, and a son, Ame, born in the rain. Then he is found dead in a canal in his wolf form and taken away by the council. Wolf Children is Mamoru Hosoda’s film about being a parent, and it covers thirteen years in two hours.
What Happens In The Country
Hana cannot raise two children who turn into wolves when they sneeze in a Tokyo flat, so she moves to a falling-down farmhouse in the mountains. The neighbours, led by a furious old farmer, teach her to grow potatoes. Yuki, the wild one, goes to school and learns to hide. Ame, the timid one, follows a fox into the forest and finds a teacher there. The two children choose opposite lives, and the storm at the end is Hana losing one of them to the mountain and letting him go.
Why It Is Hosoda’s Best
He made it after Summer Wars and before The Boy and the Beast, and drew on his own mother. The snow-run scene, when the children first run as wolves, is the sequence people show to explain the film. The house is based on a real one in Toyama. It won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation. Aoi Miyazaki voices Hana from nineteen to thirty-two.
