Willow Ufgood is a farmer and failed sorcerer’s apprentice among the Nelwyn, a people about three feet tall. A basket floats down the river with a Daikini baby inside. The baby is Elora Danan, who Queen Bavmorda has been killing every pregnant woman in the kingdom to find. Willow is sent to take her to the Daikini crossroads and hand her over. Willow is George Lucas’s fantasy film, made between the Star Wars trilogies, with Ron Howard directing and Warwick Davis in his first lead role.
What Happens On The Road
At the crossroads Willow finds Madmartigan, a swordsman in a cage, played by Val Kilmer. Two brownies the size of mice join them. Fin Raziel, the sorceress who can help, has been turned into a possum. Sorsha, Bavmorda’s daughter, is chasing them and falls for Madmartigan after a love-dust accident. The battle at Tir Asleen, the two-headed Eborsisk dragon, the pigs, and the final duel of magic at Nockmaar with Bavmorda turning the whole army into swine are the last act.
Why It Has A Second Life
ILM invented digital morphing for the possum-to-goat-to-woman sequence. Warwick Davis was seventeen. Kilmer and Joanne Whalley married after filming. The 2022 Disney+ series brought Davis back as Willow thirty-four years later. James Horner’s score is one of his best.
